MISSION - PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The Category Analyst is responsible for analyzing our clients business at their client, providing insights and recommendations, collaborating closely with sales and other related functional areas to achieve and exceed our goals for the business. This role will require extensive analysis of our clients POS data at client, linking findings to insights from research, industry data, etc. to drive actionable plans that will drive profitable business results. This role must be able to react to short-term business needs, while ensuring our clients long-term category and brand growth at their client.

This position collaborates with all functions within our client including Sales, Marketing, Demand Planning, and Product Development, to drive overall business growth. The candidate must possess strong leadership, communication and organizational skills. The candidate must be a strong strategic thinker and problem-solver, and have ability to lead and influence all team members on being fact-based and applying insights to action to drive profitable growth.

POSITION OF THE JOB IN THE ORGANIZATION

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead development of fact-based insights to drive category strategies and POS growth at our clients, client
Lead the day-to-day use of analytics, tools, and datasets for standard and ad-hoc reporting; track POS performance and trends and evaluate overall performance vs. plans and initiatives.
Regularly mine POS sales and other data (e.g. ExtraCare) to search for and identify potential areas of opportunity or risk, based on sales, shopper and category trends
Act as key lead in driving our clients and their clients understanding of and action on these opportunities
Partner with Sales preparing for their clients business reviews and joint business planning. Support team in delivering well thought out sales & growth opportunities by uncovering and presenting business building opportunities for our clients business at their client.
Partner with Demand Planning to identify opportunities to increase productivity and to ensure inventory ownership meets sales and in stock objectives.
Review, evaluate and make recommendations to the entire business model, i.e. sales and inventory. Including identifying risks and opportunities, as well as loyalty partnership initiatives.
Develop sustainable and strong category partnerships by providing strategic analytical recommendations that promote category & brand growth.
Act as an expert in category principles and their clients category objectives.
Utilize a variety of information sources, such as POS databases, customer store clusters, demographic databases, market surveys and trends to identify patterns, perform drill down investigations, exception reporting, and comparative analysis of POS performance.
Conduct post event analysis of customer merchandising events and initiatives (e.g. resets, updates, promotions, product launches) to assess performance and determine best path forward.
Create, maintain, and deliver accurate and timely standard Point-of-Sale reports for designated area(s) of responsibility on a weekly, monthly and quarterly basis. Interpret report data. Provide charts, tables, and written summaries that highlight key issues and trends.

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES/EXPERIENCE

PROFICIENCIES REQUIRED:

Creative and curious in mindset. Able to develop novel approaches to address business needs
Proficient with MS-Office programs, including PowerPoint and advanced working knowledge of Excel. Comfortable using Microsoft Access and Microsoft Query desired.
Highly organized, with a strong attention to detail.
Proven oral and written communication, story-telling, and influencing skills
Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
Ability to collaborate and work on cross-functional teams with many diverse points of view represented
Must possess a professional and positive attitude as well as a strong work ethic.

QUALIFICATIONS:

4-year college degree; MBA a plus
Minimum 3 years of consumer goods experience in analytics and/or category planning
Experience in managing data, preparing, analyzing and interpreting POS reports and developing insights
Experience in development of channel and retailer strategies, consumer/shopper segmentation, and using and “connecting the dots” between various sources of data (POS, inventory, industry research, etc.)
