Controller (could be currently an Assistant Controller or Sr. Accountant)

Job Location:
San Francisco

Our client is looking for the following:

A Controller (could be currently a Sr. Accountant or Assistant Controller) to own daily accounting responsibilities, monthly financial close, and regular strategic projects, as well as managing our part-time and full-time accountants.

You will work collaboratively with the Go-to-Market, Operations, Stores, and Brand Experience teams to track departmental costs against budgets, becoming the ultimate arbiter of cost management and cash. You must be comfortable being the “No” guy or gal but you will have a mandate directly from the Exec team to succeed in this role.

You will take the lead on building out processes, policies, and internal controls for a proper accounting function supporting our newer business units (Stores and Wholesale), while also revisiting and improving existing processes, policies, and controls for our eCommerce unit.

Due to our lean team and fast-paced environment, you will need to be versatile, a quick learner, have an impeccable eye for detail, and be willing to roll up your sleeves every day. You will also need to be capable of putting solid analyses in the hands of your business partners with recommendations on tangible actions. Above all, a successful candidate will be driven, will prioritize critical thinking, and will strive for continuous improvement.

What else will you do…

Manage monthly financial close, directly owning the revenue reconciliation and any other complex journal entries, as well as reviewing balance sheet reconciliations and adjustments, fixed asset capitalization and roll-forward, and other tasks completed by our accountants
Own variance analyses to prior periods, plan and forecast for the consolidated company and for each business unit (eCommerce, Stores, Wholesale)
Review and approve any material non-inventory purchase orders based upon defined thresholds
Review and approve all non-inventory related bills and manage daily and weekly cash flows, including supervision of vendor billings and accurate data entry
Review and reconcile expenses from credit cards and expense reports
Supervise wholesale invoicing, collections, and credit analysis
Own all tax reporting, compliance and analysis (income, payroll, and sales)
Play point on the annual audit
Track costs by department, working with each team to review actuals against departmental budgets and revise remaining budget as necessary going forward
Support VP Finance in building annual Plan and maintaining monthly forecasts, focusing on fixed operating expenses and timing of balance sheet cash flows
Assist our NetSuite implementation manager in wrapping up the project and achieving go-live in September
Work with VP Finance to deliver ad hoc analysis on various other related areas of business and cost structure, such as contribution margin
Finally, you will own the day-to-day communication and deliverables with several key external partners, such as our auditors and bankers.

What you need…

4+ years at a nationally-recognized public accounting firm (preferably in audit or transaction services)
Experience working at or with retail and consumer-focused clients (preferred but not required)
Strong knowledge of US GAAP and experience with measured control environments suitable for growth-stage companies
Active CPA license
Excellent attention to detail
Advanced spreadsheet analysis skills
Ability to collaborate and communicate (effectively and efficiently) between cross-functional teams
Hunger to learn quickly and desire to grow with the company
Strong work ethic and experience managing competing priorities
Passion for tying things out, a finely balanced journal entry, and proper length shorts!
